Rules for Australian Passport Photos

What the Australian Passport Office checks on every PC7/PC8 application.

Background

Plain light colour — white, off-white or light grey. No patterns, no visible shadows. Australia is slightly more lenient than Schengen here; any uniform pale background is acceptable.

Expression

Neutral is safest. DFAT tolerates a natural closed-mouth smile but strongly prefers a neutral resting face. No open-mouth smile, no raised eyebrows.

Glasses

Not permitted. A medical exception is possible with a statement from an optometrist — but even then, no reflections and clear lenses only.

Head coverings

Allowed for religious, medical or cultural reasons. Full face must be visible from chin to forehead, ear to ear. No fashion hats or caps.

Two prints

A paper passport application needs two identical prints. One is endorsed "This is a true photo of (your name)" on the back and signed by your guarantor. The tool's print-sheet feature produces compliant pairs.

Background shadow

The most common rejection reason — a shadow of your head on the wall. Stand 60+ cm from the background; use the background-removal tool if your original has any shadow.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Australian passport photo requirements?

DFAT requires a 35×45 mm photo with a plain light background, head 32–36 mm chin to crown, neutral expression with mouth closed, eyes open, no glasses, taken within the last six months. Two identical copies are required for paper applications.

Can I use the same photo for an Australian passport and visa?

Yes. Both Australian passports and most Australian visas (including subclass 600 visitor, 485 graduate and 189/190 skilled) accept the 35×45 mm format. ImmiAccount digital applications accept the same photo uploaded as JPEG.

Do Australian passport photos need to be signed on the back?

For paper applications — yes. One of the two identical prints must be endorsed "This is a true photo of (applicant name)" and signed by your guarantor. Digital applications through myGov or ImmiAccount do not require a signature.

Can I smile in an Australian passport photo?

A natural closed-mouth smile is tolerated, but neutral is safer. The Australian Passport Office says "a relaxed expression or natural smile" is OK — it rejects wide open-mouth smiles.

How many Australian passport photos do I need?

Two identical prints for a paper PC7/PC8 application. One digital upload for an online renewal via myGov. Australia Post Passport Agents print pairs automatically.
