Rules for French Passport & CNI Photos

What ANTS and the Préfecture check on every passport and national ID card submission.

Background

Plain light grey or light blue. Pure white is not accepted — ANTS explicitly requires a mid-tone background for contrast with the face. No patterns, no gradients.

Expression

Strictly neutral with mouth closed. No smile, no grin, no open-lip pose. A natural resting face is what ANTS expects.

Glasses

Banned since 2017 on all French passport and ID photos. No medical exception. Remove them before the shot.

Head coverings

Allowed for religious reasons (hijab, turban, kippah) when the full face is visible chin to forehead, ear to ear. Fashion hats are not permitted.

Hair

Hair must not cover the eyes or the face outline. Tie long hair back if it falls over the eyebrows or ears.

ANTS accepts photos from a Photomaton booth, a professional photographer, or home-taken photos that meet the specification. Digital submission via ANTS online is the fastest route.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the French passport photo requirements?

ANTS requires a 35×45 mm photo with a plain light grey or light blue background, head 32–36 mm chin to crown, neutral expression with mouth closed, no smile, no glasses, taken within the last six months.

Can I smile in a French passport photo?

No. ANTS and the Préfecture require a strictly neutral expression with mouth closed. Smiling is listed as a common rejection reason on the service-public.fr portal.

Can I wear glasses in a French passport photo?

No. France banned glasses on all passport and national ID card photos in 2017. Remove them for the shot.

Is the French CNI photo the same as the passport photo?

Yes — identical 35×45 mm specification. One photo file works for both the passeport and the carte nationale d'identité.

Where can I take a French passport photo?

At a Photomaton (booths at train stations, supermarkets and post offices print ANTS-compliant photos with a digital code), a professional photographer, or at home using this tool and any photo-print service.
